Aurangabad, now officially Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, is 235 km from Pune on NH-60 — about four hours through Ahmednagar. A one-way drop starts at ₹3,995.
Almost everyone who books this route is going for the same two places: Ajanta and Ellora. So the most useful thing we can tell you is which days they are closed.
People arrive having driven four hours and find the gate shut. It happens often enough that it is worth putting at the top of this page.
They are also 100 km apart, so doing both properly needs two days:
If you only have one day, choose Ellora. It is closer, the Kailasa temple is the more astonishing of the two, and it pairs with Grishneshwar and Daulatabad.
Pune → Shirur → Ahmednagar → Aurangabad on NH-60.
Leaving before 7 AM makes a real difference. The Pune-Nagar road is heavy with industrial traffic through the morning.
One-way drop from ₹3,995 — right if you are flying out of Aurangabad airport, continuing to Nagpur, or being picked up at the other end.
Round trip — for a two-day caves trip. The car and driver stay with you, take you between Ellora, Ajanta and Daulatabad, and bring you home. This is what most people should book, because Ajanta is 100 km from the city and Ellora another 30 in a different direction.
There is no useful public transport between the caves. Local options exist but they run on their own schedule, and a UNESCO site an hour before closing is not the time to be negotiating a ride.

Thirty rock-cut caves from around the 2nd century BC, known for the paintings rather than the sculpture. A hundred kilometres north of the city. Cars park at the base and a shuttle takes you to the caves, then there is a climb.
Flying into Aurangabad and heading to the caves, or flying out after? We run Pune Airport to Aurangabad as a direct transfer with flight tracking. See Pune Airport to Aurangabad and Pune airport cabs.
October to March. Marathwada gets seriously hot from April, and both caves involve walking and climbing in the open.
The caves are busiest on weekends and during school holidays. A weekday visit is a completely different experience, particularly at Ellora.
Toll and parking are not included. They are charged at actual cost and shown separately on your bill. Monument entry fees are also separate.

Ajanta Caves are closed on Mondays and Ellora Caves on Tuesdays. Check this before booking; people arrive after a four-hour drive and find the gate shut.
Not properly. They are 100 km apart and Ajanta needs most of a day on its own including the shuttle and climb. If you have one day, choose Ellora, which pairs with Grishneshwar Temple and Daulatabad Fort.
About four hours for 235 km on NH-60 via Ahmednagar. Leaving before 7 AM helps, since the Pune-Nagar road is heavy with industrial traffic through the morning.
Keep the car for a caves trip. Ajanta is 100 km from the city and Ellora another 30 in a different direction, with no useful public transport between them. A drop only makes sense if you are flying out or being collected.
No. Fuel and driver are included in the quoted fare. Toll, parking and monument entry fees are charged separately at actual cost.
Yes. Aurangabad has been officially renamed Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Both names refer to the same city and we serve it either way.
Yes. Shirdi is 130 km from Aurangabad and Shani Shingnapur sits on the route near Ahmednagar. Combining them into one trip is cheaper than separate bookings.
An Innova Crysta if elderly parents are travelling. There is a lot of walking and climbing at both sites, and the car becomes your rest point between them. An Ertiga works well for six otherwise.
October to March. Marathwada gets seriously hot from April, and both caves involve walking and climbing in the open. Weekdays are far quieter than weekends at Ellora.
