Pune Airport to Aurangabad is about 250 km and takes roughly 4.5 hours via Ahmednagar on NH-60. Starting from the airport rather than the city centre actually helps — Lohegaon is on the eastern side, which is the direction you are travelling.

Planning around your flight

If you land after 6 PM, you reach Aurangabad around 11 — workable, but it means checking in late and starting the caves the next morning. Landing before noon is ideal: you arrive by late afternoon with time to see Bibi Ka Maqbara or Daulatabad the same day.

Halts on the way

Ahmednagar is the natural break, roughly halfway, with reliable food and clean washrooms. Shirdi is a detour of about 60 km and Shani Shingnapur around 35 km from the route — both can be added if you have the time and tell us at booking.

What you are travelling for

Almost everyone on this route is going for Ellora and Ajanta. Worth knowing before you plan: Ellora is closed on Tuesdays and Ajanta on Mondays. Ajanta is a further 100 km beyond the city and needs most of a day on its own. Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga sits right beside Ellora and fits into the same visit. Choosing your vehicle

Two to four passengers with cabin bags fit in a Swift Dzire or Etios. Families of four or five arriving with check-in luggage should book an Ertiga or Innova Crysta — on a four and a half hour drive after a flight, the extra room is worth it. Groups of nine or more need a Tempo Traveller.
