The Ambabai Mandir is one of the Shakti Peethas and the reason Kolhapur sees the visitors it does. It sits in the old city, which is worth knowing when you plan the day.

If you want Panhala Fort or Jyotiba as well, you need to stay a night. Trying to add either to a day trip means rushing all three.
Pune → Satara → Karad → Kolhapur on NH-48.
The only slow stretch is Katraj at peak. Leaving before 7 AM makes this a genuinely quick run.
Panhala and Jyotiba are in the same direction and combine into one half-day with your own car.
Two things the city is known for that people usually discover on arrival:
The food. Kolhapuri mutton, tambda and pandhra rassa, and misal. It is genuinely spicy, and it is worth planning a proper lunch rather than eating at a highway stop on the way back.
Kolhapuri chappals. The real ones are made here and cost a fraction of what they do elsewhere. Ask your driver where the genuine shops are — most know.
For darshan, book a round trip. The driver waits during your temple visit and brings you home, which costs less than two one-way bookings.

October to March is most comfortable. Navratri is the most significant and by far the most crowded — the city fills completely and you should book weeks ahead.
Kiranotsav in late January and November draws large crowds for a few specific days.
